"No Whale, No Music" Iñupiat drumming and global warming
Dublin Core
Description
Sakakibara describes her work with Iñupiat peoples in the arctic who are facing climate change issues related to their food harvesting and cultural practices. The communities have a strong connection to whaling, expressed linguistically, ceremonially and through artistic expression, in addition to being a key aspect of their economy that requires training and skill. Given the attachment to whales as part of their identity, climate change becomes understood through their own expression, Sakakabira focusing on music.
